Khaki weed warrior
Photo by Nathalie Walker for Midweek Magazine
For starters, I need to do something about that paunch. Otherwise, not a bad shot of me. Thanks Nathalie. The photo--me brandishing a vanquished khaki specimen like Medusa's severed head--is from a Midweek article featuring my one-man war on the weed. The article is a somewhat over-glowing portrayal of me; but I'll just roll with it for the "about me" thing..
The one other point I would add is: My concern is not the little patches of khaki burrs we see scattered about today. We can always step around those or wear shoes. My worry is what it might look like in ten years...or even five. There is no doubt that this weed population is growing in Hawaii. It is invading new territories; and it promises to continue growing...and spreading. At exactly what rate it's growing, I don't know. But, I think it's only a matter of time before we look back and say "Gee, I wish we did something about it back then."
